Proflex
(For PROfessionals who need FLEXibility)
This course is primarily done as one on one instruction, and costs $1,800 for 30 hours of instruction (which includes our 9 hr Coastal Nav class and 21 hours of private lessons).
$1,800
Since most errors occur when heading out or returning to the dock, much of the lessonfocuses on these critical area, with lots of our unique single line (and singlehanded)docking. This class will also cover basic sailing skills, systems, weather, and all the topics listed in Basic Cruising and our Coastal Nav course certification. Textbooks are Coastal Nav and Basic Cruising.
Our traditional approach to starting students out in daysailers is a proven way to educate sailors who are able to hold their own in skills and knowledge against even lifelong sailors. Simply put, you can do far more drills like reefing, man overboards, docking on a 23’ boat in 2-3 hours than you can on a larger boat. We practice things on the Ensigns that you would never try on a large yacht, like running aground and kedging off, or sailing into the slip. We also strongly recommend that students spend some time sailing the Ensigns before moving into the larger boats. It's much cheaper to do a bad docking in an Ensign (free) than on a 37 or 40 foot yachts (easily thousands). You also become much better attuned to sail trim and other skills.
Many customers have approached us in recent years with the interest in limiting or skipping the Ensign phase of lessons and moving directly to the larger boats. After several years of offering private lessons for such customers, we have put together a package to allow a new sailor the needed skills to operate a larger cruising sailboat. Students must have joined as members on the boat they wish to use for instruction or have purchased a yacht they intend to use. We start with our Coastal Navigation Class, 9 hours of classroom instruction covering both traditional and electronic navigation. See the Coastal Nav class for more information on this component. We then offer 21 hours of Private Lessons, taught primarily on your yacht, or whatever boat the membership is for. The lessons cover all the material from our Basic Cruising Class, with lots of docking, reefing, man over board drills, anchoring, and all the other skills needed to cruise. 6 hours of the lessons can be taken on the Ensigns, for practicing skills like sailing into a dock, running aground, and other drills the Ensigns are well suited for.
You are welcome to invite a friend, partner or spouse along for the private lessons. Bear in mind that time they spend on the helm may not help you progress, and thus the class may need to be lengthened. Additional time, if needed, will be billed out at $65 an hour, a discounted rate for participants in this program.
