Signing Up
Intro to Sailing and Basic Keelboat are offered weekend mornings, from 8:00 am to 1 pm, and on weekdays (times are flexible and the cost is 10% less). We also offer Private Instruction, and courses in Basic Cruising, Advanced Cruising, Ocean Sailing.
Follow these steps to sign up
Find the course (using links at the left of this page) that matches your interests and skill level.
Check the course calendar (using links next to the course lilnks) to find an available opening that suits your schedule, fill in the registration form below, and submit it electronically (or print and fax or mail it to us). Sound Sailing Center will contact you to make payment arrangements and confirm your sign-up. If paying via check, we will ask you to please send 2 checks, one for the 50% deposit, and one for the balance due. Once you let us know that your checks are coming in, your spot will be saved. Your deposit check will not be cashed until the class is filled. If paying by credit card, you card will not be charged until the class is filled. Sales tax is 6%.
When the class is filled, we will charge the 50% deposit to your credit card, or deposit one check, and send back a copy of the registration form for your records, along with the study materials. This will serve as your confirmation. Your first name and last initial will also be posted to the class schedule on this website on the appropriate course calendar, so you can also check if the class is filled online.
The balance is due 3 weeks before the class starts. If you provide a credit card, it will automatically be billed. If you paid via a check, we will deposit the second check at this time. If, one week after the balance is due, the class still is not filled, we will reschedule the class and/or void the check or credit card if no new dates are acceptable.
Cancellations: If you cancel before we fill the class and post your name to the class list on our website, there are no charges. After we confirm the course, if you have to cancel, there is no charge if you rebook new class dates within one year and we can locate a replacement student to take your place. If we can not find a student to replace you, half of the forfeited deposit will be credited to the new class you take. There is no credit if you do not take a new class within one year. Trip insurance may be obtained to cover cancellations. Classes are shortened by about 20% if one student that drops out, and will be canceled if 2 students drop out. Naturally, if you have to drop out, you should let us know before the balance is due if possible, so the full amount is not at risk, and we have the possibility to find another student.
Private Classes, Missed Classes, Training Classes: Private lessons are $65 an hour plus the boat rental. Lessons with a US Coast Guard Licensed Captain are $90 an hour plus the boat costs.
Missed classes must be made up with private lessons. A 5-hour class can be covered in a 2-3 hour private lesson. Daysailers cost $25 / hour weekdays, $35 / hour weekends when used for make-up lessons. If there are 2 students per instructor (typically due to a student missing a class), the class normally is shortened by 20%. Classes may be occasionally taught by 2 instructors. One instructor will be an Instructor Trainer. The other instructor will be a new instructor we are training. The instructors will take turns teaching the class. Naturally, having the class taught by an instructor trainer is a good thing!
Refund Policy: NO CASH REFUNDS. There will be no refunds on credit cards or checks. If, for any personal reason, a customer decides to withdraw from our services, a credit will be issued with NO EXPIRATION DATE.
